Are All Vitamins Created Equally?
The best vitamins for our bodies come from real, whole foods. It would be a sweet life if our foods gave us everything we needed and we made all the right food choices everyday. I would eat a rainbow of colors. My foods would never be processed, always be organic and always be grown in nutrient rich soils. My wallet would be flush with money for the highest quality foods and my lifestyle would be as slow as my slow cooking. I would choose an avocado for dessert instead of ice cream.
Our being human allows for us to make strange choices for ourselves based on our emotions, instead of logic. Money weighs heavily into our food choices. Sometimes we just want a snow cone.
If we have the choice, we can add vitamins to our diet to help supplement our bodies. Whole food vitamins are closer to the foods we eat and are better absorbed by the body. It was explained to me like this:
Each vitamin is normally accompanied by food that gives it an address to deliver it to a certain part of the body. When we take vitamins, the address is no longer there. The body isn’t quite sure what to do with it. Some vitamins don’t need the address. They know what to do. But most do need the address. The mail gets lost. Whole food vitamins are different. Because they are grown on food, the address is still intact. The body reads the whole foods vitamin and says, okay, I know where this goes. The body is happy and supported by the supplemental nutrients.
While it is best to eat really, really well, when we can’t, a whole foods vitamin will be a much better support to the body than your other options.
