Chinese herbal medicine is an important aspect of the Asian medical tradition. The history of Chinese herbal therapies dates back even before the development of acupuncture. We are lucky to have about 4,000 years of clinical history to rely upon as we address your health concerns. Today, many hospitals in China use herbal medicine alongside western medical treatments, highlighting how effective herbal therapy remains today.

After an initial intake, we will prescribe a formula specifically designed for your needs and constitution. As your condition changes, the herbal formula may also change to address a new diagnosis. The formulas are administered in pills, powders, tincture or tea forms. We use herbs sourced only from well respected importers in the US with a long history of the highest quality control standards.

Chinese herbal medicine can be used alone or can help support your acupuncture treatments, thus deepening your healing. Sometimes herbal formulas are thought to work better for certain conditions. Our trained and licensed herbalist can help you decide if herbal therapy is right for you. Herbal medicine appointments can be conducted in person in our clinic in Flemington, NJ or via telehealth for residents in NJ or PA.

“Last winter I had a really bad sinus infection and bronchitis right after completing chemotherapy and radiation. I decided to seek alternative therapy since the antibiotics were not getting rid of the infection. I heard about JCA and decided to try a session and I felt safe and secure and really relaxed. I went for a number of sessions, tried some Chinese herbs and got better. Occasionally I like to go in just for general wellness. I strongly recommend Nicole and JCA.”

How It Works

During your initial consultation, we will create a treatment plan and an individualized formula to meet your health goals. As your treatment progresses and your body balances in response to your formula, we may adjust what you are taking. You can take herbs in pill, tincture, or tea forms for a natural, non-pharmacological approach to your health concerns.
Some conditions require more extensive Herbal Consults which we offer as 30 minute consults. Simple conditions may only require a 10 minute consult, which is an add-on service to your acupuncture sessions.

Total treatment time varies with each person and presentation. For more acute issues, you may see results within a few days. For more chronic issues, it may take many weeks to 6 months, depending on the severity and duration of your presentation. Even with the most complex cases, improvement is seen within the first few weeks, providing an incentive to continue with the treatment. Most formulas require you to take your formula 2-3 times a day from a few days for acute concerns or a few months for more complex health concerns.

A private herbal consult costs $85 for the initial and $50 for follow-ups. The herbal consult add-on to your acupuncture session costs $25. The price of herbs per week can vary from $15-$100 dependent on the formulation. Pills formulations tend to be cheaper at about $100 per month. Raw herbs that you will cook into a tea may be necessary for more complex health concerns and cost up to $100 per week. Raw herbs are the most effective way to receive herbal therapy.
