What are EAR SEEDS?
Based in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), ear seeds are a form of auriculotherapy, which uses acupressure points in the ear to stimulate other parts of the body. The ear is seen as a microcosm for the entire body. By placing small ear seeds, you can treat a wide variety of health concerns.
“Auriculotherapy is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat and even prevent conditions like anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, nausea, vomiting, substance abuse and gynecological and digestive disorders,” Dr. Nguyen says. “The ear seed is like an acupuncture needle that you use to stimulate a channel to help the patient’s condition without needing to puncture the skin.”
So what exactly is an ear seed? The ear seeds I like to use the most at Jersey Community Acupuncture in Flemington NJ have a small latex sticker the size of an eraser head. On the sticker is a small stainless steel bead. During a treatment, I can place each ear seed carefully on your ear in specific acupressure points that correspond with the conditions you’re experiencing. During our workshop, you will learn some basic placements.
Certain points on the ear change in color, become tender or exhibit changes in size or shape. Some areas may feel more sensitive than others. We use these visual and tactile guides to help us find the proper location of points in the ear, of which there are over 100. Once the seeds are placed, you can use acupressure to press and breathe into the ear seeds, stimulating through out the day. Ear seeds can be left in about 3-6 days. If they start to bother you, you can simply remove them.
Ear seeds and auricular acupuncture are simple and effective ways to bring healing to the body and are great for travel and at home use when you can’t make into the clinic for a treatment.
