Reduce Stress Now With These DIY Treatments
Stress effects all of us. The more tools we have to reduce stress, the better we feel. Some tools work better at certain times than others and some aren’t always available. The more options we have, the more prepared we will be. So what can we do for ourselves to feel better and reduce stress? Here are a few of my favorite DIY treatments that are simple and effective.
- Lemon Balm Infusion
Lemon Balm (Melissa officials) is an herb that you can grow in your backyard or buy at your local community acupuncture clinic. It is simple, has been used since the Middle Ages. While there is little research about Lemon Balm (which is common with herbs that cannot be patented and thus cannot make huge profits post research ), it has been used safely for hundreds of years. To make a stress reducing, anxiety-relieving infusion, simply place 1 tsp of the dried herb in a mason jar. Fill with just boiled water and cover for about one hour. Strain out the herbs and drink. Take note of the calming affect. You will feel more balanced and sleep better without any drowsiness. - Belly Breath
My initial reaction to a stressful situation, when I have the mental capacity to remember, is to take a deep, full breath into my belly. We can use breath to invigorate ourselves and we can use breath to relax. In order to relax with breath, it can be helpful to use a longer exhale. The next time you feel yourself getting anxious or responding to a stressful situation, remember your breath. Place your hands on your belly and take a long slow inhale lasting 8 counts. Allow your belly to get big and expand into your hands. Then exhale about 10-12 counts and draw your belly in. If you can focus on this breath for 5 breaths, you will feel better.
3. Acupressure for Stress Reduction
Pericardium Six (PC6) called the Inner Gate is located three finger widths up from the center of your wrist crease in between your tendon cords. This acupressure point balances your perceptions and emotions, is calming and helps to open the chest. Rub this point for a few moments and take a deep breath when you feel stressed.
4. Lavender
This lovely herb, which can also be grown in your backyard or in a pot, is not only beautiful but has a wondrous scent and has been used to reduce stress and improve sleep. Pick up some fresh lavender at the clinic to hang in your bedroom or office. Make your very own eye pillow with lavender and rice to use for naps and sleep at night. As you learn more about lavender, you’ll find out it has many more benefits, but we will save those for another post.
