Three Easy Tips for the In-between Season – Late Winter or is it Spring?

As the temperatures fluctuate and our bodies try to discern how to respond to the outside weather conditions, we can take some steps to ensure our immune system and general wellness don’t take a hit.

Step one: Dress like your grandma is watching. My grandma always told me to keep my neck covered and in the 90’s, the era of very low rise jeans, also my waist. From a Traditional Chinese medicine perspective, cold and damp can invade in these two spots specifically, so as the weather changes from cold to warm to windy to wet, keep layers with you and keep that lovely scarf at hand to keep your neck (or waist) warm and covered.

Step two: Continue to eat warming foods. Eating seasonally keeps you in tune with nature. If we are in line with the natural world, we have a much better chance to stay well. We are a part of nature, after all. This means eating seasonally to your region, so no big cold smoothies yet my friends. Eat cooked veggies, add ginger or cinnamon to warm things up and remember, that the oppressive heat of summer will be with us soon enough.

Step three: Rest. I know, it’s a radical idea. Very counter culture. Winter is the time of storing and rest, and while we edge towards Spring, we may have bursts of energy or we may just be plain old tired. When you feel tired, rest. It isn’t a pathology, it’s part of being connected to Nature. Our yang, the fire within that creates action, is still in STORAGE mode. Our yin, which nurtures our ability to be still, is still in charge. Let yin do it’s thing. Yang is coming soon to help you get that smoothie.
